Denotation and Connotation

 1) Write an analysis of the WaterAid advert above using denotation, connotation and analysis. What can you see? What are the deeper meanings in the advert? What does the advert communicate to the audience? How might an audience react after seeing the advert?

DENOTATION

I can see that the boy is living in a poor area. The wall behind him is not made well and the house behind him is underdeveloped. His clothes are worn up and quite dirty.

CONNOTATION

The boy in the advert could be malnourished. He is wearing old raggedy clothes which could connote the idea of poverty and water deprivation. The text 'dig toilets not graves' could mean that the water aid company would want to improve the area rather than let people die of malnourished and water deprivation due to poverty. The area behind him doesn't seem very developed giving me the idea that he lives in a poor area. As the ad is talking about water, he could not have access to water. Not many people are fortunate enough to have that access to water which is the reasoning behind the advert, to help other people gain access to water in poorer and undeveloped countries.

2) Now choose your own choice of advert from Google images. Save it to your documents, insert it into your blogpost and write an analysis using denotation and connotation, explaining what the advert is communicating to the audience.

DENOTATION
This advert is showing a McDonalds mcmuffin.
Each colour represents each layer/part of the mcmuffin making the audience hungry for a mcmuffin. The advert is very simple with only a few words which trigger your mind into thinking you're hungry for McDonalds.

CONNOTATION
I can connote that this advert is trying to put the idea of McDonalds and comfort food into your mind and then make you hungry.  This then gets you engsaged with the idea of mcdonalds making you go there/ order it online and therefore making you spend money.
