Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things Analysis

1) Choose THREE aspects of mise-en-scene (e.g. costume, lighting and setting) and write a short paragraph for each about the denotation and connotation and what is communicated to the audience.

Lighting

The beginning starts off with dark flickering lights making the atmosphere scary and having a creepy start to the series this could represent someone being scared or running away as that is shown in the next scene of  a man running into a lift whilst all the lights in the corridor flicker making it more intense.

Setting

The setting of this shows that this will be a sci-fi series as it starts off at a science lab. This connotes the idea of that something unsettling is happening. The darkness in the corridor creates the image that danger is coming and bad things may happen. The fast change of settings could suggest multiple things will be happening at once.

Costume

The man which is running away from something is wearing a lab coat which could tell us that he was doing something in a science lab and maybe making some medicine or drugs. Underneath his lab coat, he is wearing smart attire (tie and blue shirt) this may show that he is in a business or working.

 Extension tasks
Watch the extract again. What does this opening sequence suggest the series will be about in terms of narrative, character and genre? What is it that tells you this?

The opening sequence suggests the series will be a sci-fi as many unnatural things are happening, maybe this is a dystopian world. This tells me that bad things will happen as the beginning of the series doesn't start on a good thing.
