Media language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?
Title: Serif font ~ shows it is modern, sophisticated, professional
Anchorage text: Sans serif ~ more relaxed, minimal, modern

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?
They speak about things that are happening currently and about issues they can relate to and things rich upper class people would like and be interested in like the royal family.

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?
colours: green, white, black
Could connotate it being sophisticated, simple, modern

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)
Make-up is used to radiate and show off the beauty of the model to gain traction. A huge event-like dress is shown to show that she is professional and grown. Direct address is used to show the model is inferior and is powerful.

Representations

1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?
Emma Weymouth is on this cover. They have chosen her to be on the cover to show representation in the black community.

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?
They like other rich people like the royal family and interest in prestige things and people and focus on things happening currently. This also suggests they are nosy and want to compare their life to other rich peoples lives just like them.

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.)
Rich women and the royal family. The black community is also represented. They are represented by having a black rich woman on the front cover to show diversity.

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?
There is a stereotype that women need to look perfect and have tons of make-up on their face in order to look pretty and presentable. This is because people think that men wont like the woman if she doesn't have make-up on or isn't looking presentable or good.

Social and cultural contexts

1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')
People who are below societal standards like people in poverty or poor people as Tatler is seen as a rich and professional magazine company and wants to seem good.

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?
They only want to show the rich side of Britain and not the poor and poverty-stricken side of Britain.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler?
People who are not upper class or upper middle class may be offended as they are not getting representation by a big company
